Basketball Round Up

Action in two weekend tournaments
Senior Boys Basketball

Once again, Shawnigan co-hosted the Countdown to Playoffs Tournament with Brentwood from Feb. 1-3. According to Coach Remi Anctil, the Senior Boys team had a good tournament with three wins and one loss, ultimately falling to rival Brentwood in the final.

“Shawnigan started out strong with an 86-58 victory over Reynolds in an evening game on Thursday. Sergio P. played very well, scoring 36 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Shawn L. also made an impact, scoring 4 of 5 three-pointers,” shared Coach Anctil. “On Friday, the team beat GW Graham 74-55. Scott L. was the standout player of the game, playing hard defence, running the offence well, and scoring 13 points with 12 rebounds. The team went on to play two games on Saturday, beating Guildford Park, a 4A team from Surrey, in the semi-finals. Dru-Leo L. led the offence with 23 points. Kyle M. had a great impact off the bench with 12 rebounds. In the evening, the team played rival Brentwood. The Shawnigan players started very well but showed signs of exhaustion from the three previous games and, ultimately, conceded defeat, with Brentwood coming out on top with 72-41 score.”

Senior Girls Basketball

Meanwhile, the Senior Girls Basketball annual round robin tournament, the Shawnigan Stag Classic, ran from Feb. 2-3.

“The Senior Girls opened the Shawnigan Stag Classic at 6:45 p.m. with Game #1 vs Kwalikum, which resulted in a 64-52 win. It was a good game for all players with almost everyone scoring. Milena J. was our top scorer with 30 points and was the Player of the Game,” reports Coach Darrin Austin. “Game #2 vs Brentwood was a surprisingly good game, ending in a 69-63 win, considering it was an early morning game. Most players scored with Milena J. leading the pack with 28 points and Avery C. getting 9. Hazel B. was Player of the Game along with Danae G. Game #3 vs Cowichan was the tournament final, where the girls fell in a 52-48 loss. Despite the loss, it was another good game where three junior players were called up to help as a few Grade 12s were unavailable. The juniors (Phoebe S., Bell P., and Sammy L.) all played very well. The top scorers included Milena J. with 25 points and Tatum H. with 9, and Tatum H. was awarded Player of the Game.”
