Hockey showcase

Shawnigan's girls hockey team has enjoyed home ice for the final time this season.

The squad hosted a CSSHL showcase this weekend, with five teams combining for ten divisional matchups at the Charlie Purdey Arena.

The Shawnigan team opened play on Thursday evening, falling 4-0 to the high-flying Okanagan Hockey Academy.

On Friday, the girls earned a 3-2 win over St. Mary's in the morning before dropping a 4-2 decision to Okanagan in the evening.  Friday's morning game was punctuated by a two-goal performance from Mishayla C. and a remarkable 56-save effort from goaltender Kiara S.  In the evening, the girls enjoyed boisterous fan support as they paid tribute to the six senior players set to graduate at the end of the year.

"It was so special to honour the six graduating players who have helped build this program in the past two years, and we will miss them tremendously next year," said girls hockey coach Carly Haggard.  Coach Haggard added that the girls "played their hearts out this weekend," and that she "couldn't be prouder of how the team has played this year in a very tough division."

The team wrapped up the weekend with a 6-0 loss to division-leading Pursuit of Excellence and an 8-3 loss to Okanagan. 

The girls have now concluded their regular season, and are looking forward to the league playoffs in Penticton in March.

 

The Girls Prep team was the only Shawnigan squad in action this weekend. Next weekend, the Bantam Prep team will compete in Delta while the Midget Prep team ventures to Penticton for a series of games against OHA squads. 

The Junior Varsity team is also heading into an exciting weekend, with a boys team set to represent the School at the annual Ross Cup at Kerry Park Arena, and a special Shawnigan/Brentwood girls team ready to inaugurate a new Ross Cup female division at the Charlie Purdey Arena.
