B.C. Last Chance Qualifier
The B.C. Last Chance Qualifier, the seventh competition of the Pacific Youth Robotics Society (PYRS) 2017-18 season, took place in Surrey on Feb. 18. The qualifier saw 56 robots competing for the last remaining spots at the BC Provincial Championship.
Shawnigan sent three robots to compete, hoping to join our one robot that qualified three weeks ago in Comox. All three Shawnigan robots battled hard in the qualification round and one of our bots was selected for the quarter-final playoff round. The competition in this round saw Shawnigan on the fourth place alliance going head-to-head with the fifth place alliance team. In the best of three, it came down to the third and final game. Our robot was on the wrong end of a missed call and an errant topple of important scoring game pieces and we lost early to end the day.
However, as a bonus, one of our teams won the consolation round and another won a judges’ award for the best built and best designed robot at the tournament. Well done, Shawnigan robots!
With only one provincial qualification spot earned by the Shawnigan robotics team this season, our entire team of dedicated roboteers is now focused on designing, building and testing a brand new robot to compete at the Provincial Championship at Seaquam Secondary on Mar. 3.
