Junior boys fall just short

Shawnigan's junior boys were one shot away from a Provincial Championship appearance.

After an outstanding regular season, the boys hosted the Vancouver Island Championship, Feb. 15-17.

After opening with a 55-50 win over SMUS, the boys faced Oak Bay High School in a semifinal matchup that offered a guaranteed provincial berth.  The back-and-forth contest ended up coming down to the wire, with Oak Bay withstanding a final onslaught from Shawnigan and winning by three points.

While Oak Bay went on to fall to GP Vanier in the tournament final, Shawnigan dropped a 64-58 decision to Belmont in the back-door game, leaving Shawnigan just shy of a spot at Provincials.

Strong performances all tournament long earned Grade 10 boys Will M. and Brad L. honourable mentions in all-star voting.

While the season is now over for the junior boys, the midget boys will now take their turn to host their own Island tournament, beginning Feb. 23.  The Shawnigan squad opens play at 9 a.m. on Friday morning against Duncan Christian School.  Of the eight teams competing, the top two will earn berths to Provincials.  Find draws and more information on the Grade 9 Boys Vancouver Island Championship here.

Meanwhile, the senior boys accomplished their goals at the South Island 'AA' Championship, Feb. 14-17 at Brentwood.  The boys opened the event with a victory over Pacific Christian School before earning a 74-44 win over SMUS. The two victories were enough to propel Shawnigan into the Island final against Brentwood and to qualify directly to the Island AA Championship, which begins Feb. 22 at SMUS.
