Senior boys qualify for Provincials

Shawnigan's senior boys are heading back to the Provincial 'AA' Basketball Championship.

After finishing second at the South Island Championship, Feb. 14-17, the boys opened their quest at the Island tournament with a comprehensive win over Brooks on Thursday evening.

On Friday, Shawnigan topped perennial powerhouse Lambrick Park 96-53, thereby earning a spot in the Island final and a berth to the Provincial Championship.  Saturday's final saw Shawnigan facing rival Brentwood for the fifth time this season, ultimately falling 62-49.

Dru-Leo L. and Sergio P. were both named first-team All-stars for their performances at the Island Championship, while Scott L. was named a second-team All-star.  Shawnigan's players of the game were Tunde A., Scott L., and Sergio P.

The senior boys will now return to the BC 'AA' Championship for the first time since an impressive 5th place finish in 2016.  This year's tournament runs March 7-10 at the Langley Events Centre.

The senior boys will be the last Shawnigan basketball team in action, after the midget boys saw their season come to a close this weekend.

As host team of the Grade 9 Boys Island Championship, the boys earned a win over Mark Isfeld and suffered losses to Duncan Christian and Kwalicum to ultimately finish in a tie for 5th.

Shawnigan's players of the game were Benjamin K., Reid P., and Jack M.
