Career Day

The Shawnigan community enjoyed a successful Career Day on Friday, with breakout sessions and discussion groups taking place across campus. Twenty-five guests, including alumni, parents, faculty and friends of the school, gave their time to provide students with perspectives on and information about different career fields and professions.

Friday's keynote address was provided by current parent and local optometrist Trevor Miranda. Speaking about 'The Pursuit of Happiness," Dr. Miranda shared information about his development and practice, and encouraged students to choose their own attitudes, to be present, and to play to their strengths.

In addition to career speakers, students were also able to attend information sessions run by Shawnigan’s Guidance team about university life and developing e-portfolios, as well as a special breakout session focusing on the transition from high school to university led by four alumni at various stages of their post-secondary education.

Preceding the main Career Day activities on Friday was a special event on Thursday catering to Grade 8s and Grade 9s. Organized by the Grade 8 and Grade 9 coordinators, this event saw students from these grades attend career information sessions led by staff from across the School. These sessions gave the students an opportunity to discover more about the educational background and career paths of professionals working at Shawnigan in fields as diverse as education, finance, communications and hospitality.
