Elk Lake Regatta

First races of the season

Shawnigan's rowing program is excited for the upcoming season.

Head of Rowing Colin Mattock says athletes had a great weekend on all fronts at this weekend's Elk Lake Regatta, with strong finishes from junior crews and many rowers competing for the first time.

Among the highlights:

Junior B (U17) – The men's coxed quad placed second, the women's coxed quad finished third, and the women's double placed fourth (just half a second behind the third place crew).

Junior A (U19) – Ben H. and Dylan A. raced singles in a Junior National Team qualifying event. Both did well for their first competition of the year, but did not make finals in a very tough field of athletes. The Junior A Men's quad also missed out on the final.

The Junior A Women also raced well, particularly considering it was the first race for several of them. The girls quad were in a tight heat and were in the hunt to the line but ultimately missed out. The girls eight, meanwhile, finished one second behind Brentwood but came away with a number of things to work on moving forward.

Many alumni were also spotted racing or coaching at the regatta. Alan Roaf ’63, Kyle Fredrickson ’17, Nicole Fredrickson ’15, Travis Gronsdahl ’15, and Kelly Halvorsen ’17 were coaching or racing with the University of Victoria while Victoria Schuster ’17 was coxing for the University of British Columbia.
