Provincial Payoff

Basketball boys finish 5th in BC

Shawnigan's senior boys have earned a restful Spring Break.

The boys wrapped up play at the Provincial AA Basketball Championship on Saturday, earning a victory in the 5th place game to finish an impressive run on a winning note.

After finishing second in this year's Vancouver Island Championship, the squad headed into the BC Championship ranked 8th overall.

The boys opened the tournament with a come-from-behind 71-65 win over Pacific Academy to propel themselves into the elite eight.

Unfortunately for Shawnigan, the draw prescribed a quarter-final matchup against Brentwood College School – the top ranked team in BC, the defending Provincial champs, and a rival who had beaten Shawnigan in five previous matchups on the year.  The contest began well for Shawnigan, with the underdogs leading 35-27 at half time. However, Brentwood players got hot in the second half, shooting 43% over the final two quarters to win 75-55.  The game was the toughest the Brentwood boys would face, as they went on to win the tournament and defend their Provincial title.

Shawnigan would continue to represent the School well, earning a 60-56 victory over No. 4 Charles Hays on Friday and then a 62-55 triumph over No. 6 Britannia in Saturday's 5th place game.  Dru-Leo A. was named a first-team All Star for his play at the tournament, while Sergio P. was named a second-team All Star.

The 2018 tournament bore a striking resemblance to the 2016 event, when 11th-ranked Shawnigan finished 5th overall, losing only their quarter-final matchup against the top-ranked team and ultimate tournament champions (Collingwood School).  Shawnigan's best-ever finish at the BC Championship was in 1975, when the School finished second in the lower tier of Provincial competition.
