Girls rugby tour

A visit to Great Britain

Shawnigan's girls rugby team enjoyed a blend of competition and culture during a Spring Break tour of England and Wales.

Representing the School abroad for the first time since 2013, the girls travelled from March 18-28, beginning in the Welsh capital of Cardiff. On just the second day of the tour, the team lost their opening fixture by a narrow margin but performed well overall and set the tone for victories throughout the rest of the trip.

In their second matchup, the girls earned a convincing victory against Gowerton. They then split their squad by age groups for very successful games in Telford and Ozwestry, England.

Billeted throughout the trip, the girls made new friends and enjoyed a cultural immersion unique to the region. "It was cool for them to see the culture of rugby and the history of the game in the UK," says Coach Laura Russell. "A lot of our girls are new to the game, and for them to have this experience … we couldn't ask for a better way to kick off our season."

Off the field, the 20 players and three coaches enjoyed cultural experiences including a tour of an underground coal mine, an old castle, and Cardiff's Millennium Stadium. They also went zip lining in Wales and finished the trip with some sightseeing in London.
