Colts rugby tour

A visit to Italy

The Colts have returned from 'Il bel paese.'

From March 22 - April 2, Shawnigan's junior boys rugby team toured Italy, enjoying vigorous competition, cultural exploration, and hearty helpings of fine cuisine.

Beginning in Milan, the excursion included hotel stays, tours of historic and cultural sites with local experts, and insider glimpses into world of Italian rugby thanks to some of Coach Ander Monro's local connections.

Other stops included the famed cities of Verona and Venice, as well as smaller hamlets like Sirmione and Garda. The group explored art galleries, Roman ruins and ancient castles, while travelling by plane, bus, and gondola.

On the field, the Colts lost 41-28 in their tour debut against Treviso –the top youth club in Italy. In Colorno, the team finished fourth in a twelve-team tournament of top U-16 sides. "We were immensely grateful for the opportunity to play in this tournament," said Coach Monro. "The level of challenge for our players at this stage of the season was ideal from a development perspective."

The Colts begin the defence of their provincial title when they face Oak Bay High School on April 6 at UVic.
