Support us

The Advancement Office is involved with alumni relations, events, the Alumni News, and external relations for the Annual Fund and the Centennial Plan.

Our aims are to promote a greater understanding of the School, to keep you informed, to build a strong network and to encourage and assist you and those who wish to make a gift to the School.

Shawnigan is fortunate to be able to count on the generosity of our community for annual giving, capital projects and longer-term initiatives. Your support sets an example to the rest of our community that you believe in us. By supporting Shawnigan, you make a great school truly exceptional.

Donations to the School from supporters in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom will receive a tax receipt in the mail.

The Annual Fund

Each year, the Annual Fund offers our Alumni, parents and friends an opportunity to play a bigger role in the lives of Shawnigan’s students. The donations received support various needs at the School. Most importantly, it provides Financial Assistance to 45% of our students. This ensures that every deserving student, regardless of their socio-economic background, is afforded the opportunity of a Shawnigan education. Please click here to view our Annual Fund brochure.

The goal is to encourage as much of our community as possible to participate. Every donation, no matter the amount, makes an impact. It funds buildings, creates programs, and equips teachers. With over 100 funds available, you have the opportunity to direct your support as you wish.

Below are some of the many ways your donation can make a difference. To find out more about each fund, please contact Greg Stevenson, Director of Development, at (250) 743-6487 or gstevenson@shawnigan.ca.

  • Gifts-in-Kind, Gifts-of-Stock and Appreciated Securities

    Gifts-in-Kind:
Special gifts-in-kind may be considered on an individual basis. The gift must provide value to one of the School’s programs. Tax receipts can currently only be provided for Canadian gifts. For gifts valued at more than $1,000, an independent third-party appraisal must be provided from a qualified professional.

For more information, please contact the Advancement Office at 250-743-6235.

Gifts of Stock and Appreciated Securities:
While cash donations receive a receipt for the full amount of the gift, securities offer an additional advantage in that donors receive both a receipt for the full current value of the appreciated securities, and an exemption from capital gains taxes on the amount of the appreciation. This can be a significant advantage over a direct donation of cash.

To make a gift of securities, please contact Rudy Massimo directly at 250-743-6290.
  • Matching Gifts

Many companies will match gifts made by an employee, employee spouse, retiree or director. Donors should check with their company's Human Resources department to see if the employer matches gifts, and obtain a matching gift form to mail in with their donation.
  • Legacy Gifts

Legacy giving to Shawnigan can be tailored to your own unique financial circumstances. Your advisor, lawyer or tax planner can help you find the way that works best for you and your family.

There are many ways to make a legacy gift.

    Bequests:
Naming Shawnigan as a beneficiary of your Will can, when properly planned, reduce the rate at which your estate is taxed. You may make a charitable bequest of a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate or the remainder of your estate after planning to care for your family and friends.

    Life Insurance:
A gift of life insurance is a simple and straight forward way to make a commitment now that allows for a significant gift in the future. You also receive a charitable tax receipt for the premium payments.

    Charitable Gift Annuities:
Charitable gift annuities enable you to make an immediate gift to Shawnigan and receive guaranteed income for life.

Charitable Remainder Trusts and Gifts of Residual Interest:
You and other beneficiaries can receive income for life or for a set number of years. Donors will receive an immediate charitable income tax deduction, immediate income and relief from tax on capital gain. When the trust expires, the assets remaining in trust go to support the mission of Shawnigan Lake School.

    Gifts of Shares:
If you own publicly traded securities (ie. stocks, bonds, mutual fund units or shares) that have appreciated in value, it may be advantageous to donate them directly to Shawnigan, rather than cashing them and making a donation. Why? If you donate the securities directly to Shawnigan, you don’t pay capital gains on the appreciated value of the shares, and you receive a charitable tax receipt for the value of the shares.
