As part of our unit on genetics in AP Biology 12, we conducted a lab to genetically transform bacteria with the DNA of a jellyfish. Inserting modified genes of a jellyfish into bacteria would allow the bacteria to glow in similar conditions to a jellyfish’s environment. The lab followed a strictly timed procedure that was challenging, concluding in some very mixed results (to say the least!), but two groups managed to successfully grow green fluorescent bacteria.
Thanks to Mr. Wilke for arranging this university-level lab for us and for (as always) showing us how it’s done!
We acknowledge with respect the Coast Salish Peoples on whose traditional lands and waterways we live, learn and play. We are grateful for the opportunity to share in this beautiful region, and we aspire to healthy and respectful relationships with those who have lived on and cared for these lands for millennia.
