I have learned over my years at Shawnigan that if you want to get student participation in any activity then the best way is to make it a competition. That is exactly what we have done in the visual arts. Each year the House Fine Art captains are asked to mount a display of art work completed by students in their House. Due to display space, we limit each House to four junior pieces and four senior pieces. This year the display took place in the lobby of the Shaw Science Centre from April 13 -24th.
The rankings for the Inter-house competition are as follows:
Strathcona
Renfrew
Groves
Lonsdale's
There are 12 different visual arts currently being offered at the School, ranging from film animation, to fly tying, to woodwork and textile arts. As always, there is a lovely display of work that many of us rarely get an opportunity to see in our busy lives. I also want to thank the staff at Shawnigan for contributing some of their creations to the displays.
We acknowledge with respect the Coast Salish Peoples on whose traditional lands and waterways we live, learn and play. We are grateful for the opportunity to share in this beautiful region, and we aspire to healthy and respectful relationships with those who have lived on and cared for these lands for millennia.
