SHOC

Shawnigan House of Commons
“Never retreat, never explain, never apologize; get the job done and let them howl.” - Nellie McClung

One hundred years ago, Nellie McClung organized a women's mock parliament in Manitoba to change the political status-quo in the province. Thanks to her leadership (and many others), the suffragist movement eventually brought about much needed change. In a similar spirit of political change, Grade 11 students participated in the inaugural SHOC (Shawnigan House of Commons) for a mock parliament. This was the culminating activity to their study of government and included debate on the Green Party's 'Guaranteed Livable Income' bill. At SHOC the Green Party held a minority government. After much debate in the House and Committee stage, the bill passed and was quickly followed by a crisis situation in Iraq and Syria. Unfortunately for the government, the House was dissolved after a Conservative motion of 'non-confidence' passed. This event would not have been possible without the leadership from students in the Model UN program.
