Spring Sports

The dawn of a new sports term

The sun is just in time.

A new term of sport is arriving at Shawnigan Lake School, just as winter teams take their final shots at glory.

Introductions and try-outs for an array of spring sports began this week, while several marquis programs are already gearing up for exciting tours at Spring Break.

The spring sport roster includes familiar heavyweights as well as some fresh new faces.

On the rugby field, the 1st XV will be aiming for a remarkable 8th consecutive appearance in a provincial 'AAA' championship final. The squad won five straight titles from 2009-2013 and will kick off this season with a journey to Australia and New Zealand.

The Read Crewhouse will also draw considerable attention, as a corps of senior athletes works towards a triumphant culmination of their Shawnigan careers. Rowers will once again compete locally and nationally, while the Senior Boys Eights are eyeing a berth at the prestigious Royal Henley Regatta in England.

Kayaking, meanwhile, makes its Shawnigan debut as one of 14 spring sports in total. Ocean Kayakers will enjoy hikes and overnight campouts, while river kayakers will test themselves in some of Vancouver Island's gnarliest whitewater.

"The start of every term allows us to measure ourselves against other schools" says Mark Hall, the School's Director of Athletics. "We get to see young people given another opportunity to shine in their strengths and discover new adventures."

Whether its soccer or golf, fitness or cross-country, students at Shawnigan are waking up to more daylight and even more opportunity.
