September lends great weather for Outdoor Pursuits.
The Outdoor Pursuits students enjoy many amazing experiences and lessons including, paddling, hiking, trail maintenance and learning how we play a part in our ecology. Learning to balance, brace and roll a river kayak and paddling a canoe are lessons learned on the lake; while paddling ocean kayaks in the Cowichan Bay Estuary, as they did this past week, gives relevance to how fragile that ecosystem is in our environment.
This weekend, the group will hike up Mt Tsouhalem which will give a bird's eye view of the estuary. In addition, students will be required to know basic first aid, especially with the prevention of blisters!
At the end of the month, they are off to Portland Island for an overnight adventure which will highlight the need for careful planning and preparation for wilderness trips.
We acknowledge with respect the Coast Salish Peoples on whose traditional lands and waterways we live, learn and play. We are grateful for the opportunity to share in this beautiful region, and we aspire to healthy and respectful relationships with those who have lived on and cared for these lands for millennia.
