Why Shawnigan

Located just across the Canadian border on picturesque Vancouver Island, Shawnigan Lake School has a history of welcoming American students dating back to the 1950s. Because of its location, the School has particularly strong representation from across the Pacific Northwest.

As Canada’s largest boarding school, Shawnigan offers a unique experience, immersing students in a 24-hour educational environment where academics are enhanced by exceptional opportunities in the arts, sports, and student life, all within a values-driven culture.

Shawnigan brings students from all over the world together on its 270-acre campus, creating a unique environment where students celebrate cultural differences and cultivate their global citizenship. Students gain independence, confidence, and a globally recognized education within a safe, supportive community.
"At Shawnigan, I’ve grown into someone more confident and capable than I could have ever imagined. It has taught me to step outside my comfort zone and enjoy every moment, and has shaped me in ways I will carry with me forever."
Georgia N. '26 (California)
"What makes Shawnigan truly special to me is the incredible sense of community and support I find here and in the hockey program. Ever since I arrived last year, the hockey program has been the heart of my experience and what makes this place so special to me."
Owen V. ’28 (Oregon)
"At Shawnigan, I found a true sense of belonging within the community. Being surrounded by people who supported and accepted me allowed me to grow more confident in who I am, and shaped the way I see myself and others."
Sam T. ’26 (Arizona)

Shawnigan Graduates Attend
Top Universities

By having taken “the road less traveled,” American students who attend Shawnigan are at an advantage when they apply to US, UK, and Canadian colleges and universities. Shawnigan regularly sends graduates to top universities around the world, including many of the finest American institutions.

“American citizens who attend high school abroad often have an edge in US admissions because they bring geographic diversity, global perspective, and real proof that they can adapt. If the academics are strong and the coursework is rigorous, international experience can make an application stand out.”
– Greer Bevel, Head of University Guidance

Academic Success for All

Shawnigan students have the opportunity to use the School’s renowned Learning Centre, an integral component of many students’ academic success. Students choose to participate in the Learning Centre for a variety of reasons, including support for learning challenges; academic difficulties; recovery from injury, illness, or prolonged absence; and mental health challenges that interfere with academics. Over half of the students who use the Learning Centre take AP or honours courses while at Shawnigan, and 100 per cent of those who use the Learning Centre receive college or university acceptances.

We chose Shawnigan Lake School for our children’s high school journey for several reasons: we highly regard the whole student approach Shawnigan takes, emphasizing academic excellence, arts, sports and leadership opportunities in a beautiful, supportive and stimulating environment,” - current American parent of two at Shawnigan
