The Lecky family’s connection to Shawnigan Lake School is foundational. John M.S. Lecky ’57 (Groves’) was a visionary whose commitment to the School is absolute.
As a member of the Shawnigan Board of Governors from 1997 to 2001, John’s commitment to the School never wavered. From Lecky House to the Hyde-Lay Pavilion to the Read Crewhouse to Marion Hall, John’s presence can be felt in every corner of campus. His vision and passion for Shawnigan contributed to the development as we know it today.
A dual-sport powerhouse, John represented Canada in rugby and rowing, winning Olympic silver in 1960 and competing in the legendary Cambridge-Oxford Boat Races. Built thanks to John’s generosity, Lecky House was created specifically to host teams from Rugby Canada, Rowing Canada, and other national programs in hopes of bringing elite athletes to train at Shawnigan.
Today, John’s legacy lives on, not just in our buildings, but through the John M.S. Lecky Scholarships, named in honour of John to provide life-changing access for Shawnigan students and athletes who embody his spirit of leadership and competitive drive. These scholarships ensure the next generation has the same opportunities to excel as he did.
