is my first year at Shawnigan, and honestly, standing in front of you all today feels kind of unbelievable. A year ago, I never would have imagined I'd be at a school like this, let alone giving a speech in Chapel to the people who made it possible.
Before Shawnigan, life looked pretty different. My family has always supported me the best they could, but going to a school like this felt completely out of reach, like something that happened to other kids, not me. I heard about Shawnigan, and it sounded incredible, but I remember thinking, “There's no way I'll ever get in, and even if I did, how would I afford it?” It felt like a dream that wasn't meant for me.
But that changed because of people like you. Because of your generosity and belief in students you have never even met, I received a scholarship that brought me here. And that moment did not just open a door, it changed the direction of my life. It told me that I mattered, that people believed in my potential, and that I deserved a chance to grow.
For me, spirituality has always been a very important part of my life because it helps me to feel connected to the world around me and act with compassion in everything I do. I learned how important that was when my dad passed away. That time in my life was confusing and scary, especially when I started forgetting little things about him, like his voice or the songs he used to sing. Spirituality became the way I held onto him. Turning to prayers, music, and memories helped me feel close to him again.
Since coming to Shawnigan, I have been given so many meaningful experiences, from taking part in Chapel services and Jewish rituals to meeting Buddhist monks and joining the musical. I have met teachers who push me in all the best ways, and friends who make me feel like I belong. I have experienced things I never would have had the chance to do anywhere else.
Every day, I feel myself becoming more confident, more curious, and more excited about the future. And every day, I remind myself that I am only here because of kindness, your kindness.
So I want to say thank you, for giving me this chance, for helping me start my journey at Shawnigan, and for shaping a future I never thought I would have. So, I plan to pay it forward and help someone find a place to grow, to dream, and to belong.
