Legacy Matters - September 2019

With the first week of September in full swing, the campus is a busy place embarking upon its 103rd school opening. This year we welcome 173 new students into our community, bringing the total student population to 536. For these bright young faces, it is undoubtedly an amazing awe-inspiring and perhaps worrying place to be this week.

A lot has happened since I last reported in the spring of this year – including a well-attended Legacy Luncheon in Victoria at the Union Club on April 5. Joining me to mark the occasion were Headmaster Larry Lamont and long-serving husband and wife duo Gaynor and Rhodri Samuel. We can thank Gaynor and her Team for our continued enrolment success. Rhod has recently taken on responsibility for Alumni Affairs, which is a natural progression for him given his 26 years of teaching, house-directing and coaching involvement at Shawnigan.

Legacy Luncheons provide the School an opportunity to thank members of our community who have considered leaving the School living legacy or a bequest in their estate plans. Including Shawnigan Lake School in your estate plans after family and loved ones are cared for assists the School with its mission. We can attract, retain and graduate future leaders and shapers of tomorrow. I welcome the chance to discuss how you might be inspired to become a member of the School’s Legacy Society.

Legacy Luncheons are also a wonderful venue to acknowledge our multi-year donors. These donors provide the school the assurance we need to meet the many demands of a school like Shawnigan.

In Memoriam John B. Burr 49 (Lake’s)

It is with sadness that I write to let the Shawnigan community know we have lost a member of our Legacy Society – John Bartlett Burr, member of the class of 1949, died July 3, 2019 in Salem, Oregon.

In 2006 with his wife Katharine, John left the school the inheritance he received from his Aunt Edie. John was able to attend Shawnigan in the 1940’s because of financial support from his Aunt Edie.  He was forever grateful to her for this opportunity and to the Founder, C.W. Lonsdale, for the education he received, which he always attributed to his future success.

The school community is grateful to the Burrs for creating the John and Katharine Burr Bursary, which awards scholarships to deserving students each year.
