February Sports Update

From the Head of Shawnigan Regatta in late November to climbing and basketball competitions this week, the last few months have seen a great deal of success for Shawnigan’s teams and athletes in a variety of sports.

ROWING

After a break of several years, the Head of Shawnigan Regatta returned in late November with strong results from the host rowing crews.

The early-morning fog burned off as the sun rose in the sky, and although the Shawnigan team had some members unable to compete due to illness, the School collected first-place finishes in the U19 boys’ single (Steven D.), the U17 boy’s eight, the U15 boys’ and girls’ coxed quads, and novice girls’ quad, as well as a second-place finish in the U19 boys’ double.

Staff members got into the act as well, with Mrs. Julie Platt joining a masters four crew that posted a brilliant time, and Mr. Travis Gronsdahl placing second in the masters single on raw time. A team of administration staff taking part in a health and wellness rowing initiative placed second in their women’s quad race.

In all, five clubs took part in the Head of Shawnigan, with a total of 49 entries.

More recently, the rowing team took part in the Kraken Erg indoor rowing competition at Brentwood College School last weekend. Waylon S. and Oscar B. placed first and third, respectively, in the U15 boys’ division, Oscar missing second place by 0.3 seconds. Jack P. raced in the U17 boys’ division, two years up from his usual class, and placed second with a fantastic time. Isabella P. placed third in a close battle in the U19 lightweight women’s division. Other notable performances saw Sam P. set a personal best and land in the top six, Christian P. finish in the top five despite battling an illness, and Edward W. cracking the top third of his division even though he had never before pulled an erg machine.

BASKETBALL

Between league games, tournaments, and tours, the senior boys’ basketball team has had an action-packed season. The team recently returned from a successful trip to the prestigious St. John’s Jam tournament in Vancouver, where they won two games and lost one. The tournament has been running for 24 years, and this was Shawnigan’s first appearance. The team left on Wednesday for a trip to northwestern BC for a series of four games against top 2A teams in Terrace and Prince Rupert. On February 19-21, Shawnigan will host the 2A boys’ Island Championships.

The senior girls’ team went into the North Island championships this week as the bottom seed, but didn’t let their underdog status define the tournament for them. They opened by knocking out the top seed behind a strong two-way performance by Katie D. and a buzzer-beater three-point shot from Sophie W. In their second game, Emilie C. and Dora A. led the way with countless steals and fast-break layups in a 20-point win over Kwalikum.

Jessie A. and Lauren W. were leaders on defence throughout the tournament, and Ava E. and Mersaya H. helped push the pace and fund the energy Shawnigan needed. The team came up short in the final on Thursday evening, but will be ready for the Island championships next weekend.

“The coaches are beyond impressed with how hard this team worked and fought to earn their spot in the next round, and proved they are a force to be reckoned with,” coach Ms. Ziaya Doman commented. “Excellent work ladies, the future is bright.”

ICE HOCKEY

The U18 Prep boys’ ice hockey team hosted the annual Robertson Invitational tournament on January 8-11, marking 10 years of the Charlie Purdey Arena with appearances from Mr. David Robertson, a former Headmaster, his wife Lynn, and several special guests. In addition to Shawnigan, the field included two other Canadian Sport School Hockey League teams, on BC U18 AAA team, and two prep school teams from California. Shawnigan won four games in a row to start the tournament, the lost to their CSSHL rivals Pacific Coast Hockey Academy in the final. Phoenix H. tied for the tournament scoring lead with 11 points in five games.

That same weekend, the U18 Prep girls’ team was competing at the University of Ottawa Gee Gees Invitational, a U22 AA tournament for teams from across Canada. Finishing fourth in their pool after the round robin, Shawnigan beat teams from Edmonton and Lloydminster in the playoffs to finish on a high note. Grace C. led Shawnigan with three goals, and Zoe C. added three assists.

CLIMBING

The competitive climbing team secured some outstanding results at the Brentwood Top Rope Scramble this past Tuesday. Emily R. finished second in the experienced female division, just three points shy of first place. “She did an incredible job pushing herself on challenging climbs, reaching new heights, while encouraging her teammates to do the same,” said coach Ms. Jessica Dick.

Danike E. finished fifth in the experienced female division in her first competition in several years. Nils S. and Daniel H. tied for 10th among experienced males, and in the recreational open division, Dorje S. placed first, and Benneit H. finished eighth.

SQUASH

Shawnigan hosted a BC Silver Series event at the E.R. (Ned) Larsen Squash Centre on January 26, with 23 students and eight members of the community squash program in the field of 80 athletes.

Kaleb A. reached the Tier 1 final, narrowly losing three games to one. Chloe W. started as the bottom seed in Division 2, but battled her way to the final, where she defeated Shawnigan teammate Kan O. 3-2. In Division 4, Mixon S. overcame some strong competition to win his first Silver Series title. Division 6 had another all-Shawnigan final, with Marius W. taking the win over Akira O., who just started playing squash in November. Another newcomer to the sport, Kevin W., saw his hard work pay off in his first Silver Series title in Division 8.
