All three of Shawnigan's hockey teams hit the ice this weekend as the season wrapped up for the Bantams and the Development team.
The Varsity squad kicked off the weekend with a resounding 6-1 win over Calgary's Edge School on Saturday morning. The team heads to the National Independent Schools Invitational Championships this week and then competes in league playoffs starting March 12.
The Development team, meanwhile, had a fabulous time at the 16th annual Ross Cup tournament at Kerry Park. The group went down 6-4 to Brentwood's first team in a barn-burner to open the tournament. Harrison A. played brilliantly in goal, winning MVP for Shawnigan. The team then took a beating from St. George's. Spirits were high, however, and Callahan M. got the nod as Shawnigan's "big gun" of the match. The late game saw the beginners and novice players in a really exciting match against Brentwood's 2nd squad. The group came up short in a 3-1 loss, but everyone had a great time, parents included. Konner W. won MVP in this one and is absolutely thrilled. The tournament ended with a final loss to Brentwood, but also a terrific bonding experience to close out the inaugural hockey season.
The Bantam team concluded the season with an undefeated weekend on home ice. On Friday evening, the squad beat Kerry Park 7-3. Saturday afternoon, the team enjoyed terrific support as students, faculty, and Shawnigan Governors packed into the School arena for a matchup against Juan de Fuca. Surrounded by Black and Gold, the Bantams edged the Grizzlies 6-4 in a back-and-forth contest. The weekend and season concluded with a 4-3 triumph over Comox.
