  • A November Trip to Remember

    Each November, most students return home for a week-long mid-term break, but complex circumstances, such as international travel, make that difficult for some families. For students who are unable to return home, Shawnigan offers the Wild West Coast Trip, which takes students on an action-packed tour of Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. It is an excellent opportunity for those students to experience Canada’s beautiful, rugged and unique West Coast, learn about our Indigenous cultures, and have fun with their fellow students. Ms. Rachel Stephens, one of the trip leaders, and Grade 8 students Mikel and Pablo Neme Hagerman shared their stories about the trip with us.

  • More than a Science Fair

    Shawnigan has a long-standing relationship with the Japan Super Science Fair, hosted by Ritsumeikan Junior and Senior High School in Nagaokakyo City, Kyoto. Six students and one staff member travelled to Japan this year for the fair that ran from October 31 to November 6, joining their peers from 55 schools in 20 countries. Adison Labonte was one of those six students, and she shares her memories of the trip here.

  • Boarding House Bakes & Late-Night Snacks

    At Shawnigan, each of our boarding houses is equipped with a full kitchen loaded with everything you need to get creative. On weekends or after prep, many of our students head to the kitchen to cook up tasty concoctions for themselves and their friends. For this post, I’ve asked three chefs from Kaye’s House to share their favourite recipes. From carrot cake to chicken noodle soup, these recipes are student-approved, easy to make, and guaranteed to make you the talk of your boarding house.

    During the Beyond the Gate backcountry expeditions in late September – either hiking in Strathcona Provincial Park or on Newcastle Island, or kayaking to and around Portland Island – Shawnigan Grade 9 students kept journals, writing reflections or descriptive pieces about their experiences in the wilds of Vancouver Island and the Salish Sea.
