The Debate Team was proud to represent Shawnigan at the BC Provincial Tournament, also known as the Law Foundation Cup. The tournament was held at St. George's School and four of our debaters qualified for this rigorous two-day competition.
The team comprised of Julianne D. and Cecil A. in the Senior category and the dynamic duo of Victoria S. and Chandler G. in the Junior category. Results were outstanding, with Chandler finishing 6th in the Province in the Junior category and Julianne placing 8th in the Senior category.
It is important to point out that although debate loosely falls under the Model United Nations umbrella, this initiative is student run. Cecil convenes practices on Friday afternoons and our invaluable intern Mr. Henry Loxdale coaches the teams.
Both teams did so well that we attended the Finals at the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish where we were treated to a banquet and were able to watch the final debate. We are very proud of these four young students and congratulate them on representing our school so well.
We acknowledge with respect the Coast Salish Peoples on whose traditional lands and waterways we live, learn and play. We are grateful for the opportunity to share in this beautiful region, and we aspire to healthy and respectful relationships with those who have lived on and cared for these lands for millennia.
