Erging events

The first rowing of 2017
Shawnigan athletes enjoyed the first competition of 2017 this weekend.

With Shawnigan Lake still thawing from an unusually cold spell, rowers ventured to the University of Victoria and Mill Bay for both competitive and friendly erg races.

Many of Shawnigan's top rowers attended Sunday's Monster Erg at UVic, competing as individuals against some of the top rowers from across B.C. and beyond.

Top performances included Isabella C. and Hannah N., who finished second and third in the Jr. B women's category. Brenner K. finished third overall as the top Vancouver Island athlete in the Jr. B men's division.

The event also exposed some of the School's top rowers to university coaches as well as to Canada's para-rowing Head Coach, John Wetzstein.

For athletes with less competitive experience, Shawnigan and Brentwood College School hosted Saturday's annual Brentwood/Shawnigan Erg Duel at Brentwood.

Highlights included Georgia H., who placed first overall in the Jr B girls event, and Ryan S., who finished 31 seconds ahead of his closest Grade 8 rival.

Shawnigan Head of Rowing Colin Mattock says coaches are looking forward to getting back onto the water in the coming days, and excited for the annual Hungerford / Head of the Lake Regattas in mid-February.
