Basketball season concludes

Teams compete at Island Championships

As the snow melts around Shawnigan Lake, the basketball season is drawing to a close.

While the senior boys have more games to come, the rest of the School's basketball players are now moving on to a new term of sport.

Senior Girls:

The senior girls saw their campaign come to an end at this weekend's Island Championship at Lambrick Park Secondary.

After a strong second-place finish at North Islands, the girls opened the Island tournament with a narrow victory over Mark Isfeld.

A loss to powerhouse Ballenas put the girls into a must-win showdown with Nanaimo District Secondary on Saturday. The contest featured strong play from Alexie P. and Grade 9 standout Milena J., with NDSS breaking a deadlock in the second half to win by eight points.

Junior Girls:

The junior girls concluded up their season at this weekend's Island Championship in Duncan.

Missing a handful of key players, the girls fell to Claremont, Wellington and host Cowichan.

Coach Ronni Brown says that despite the modest ending, the girls produced a great season and some stellar results. "I'm really proud of how they represented their School and fought hard until the very end," she said.

Junior Boys:

It was a quiet end to the season for the junior boys team.

After a great showing at the ISAs, the team played their remaining games against Duncan Christian School and Chemainus Secondary, picking up two great wins, with Ciaran B. and Jacob F. leading the scoring.

The team missed the playoff schedule due to Ski Week and also had a game against Frances Kelsey get cancelled, meaning despite the efforts of the coaches to schedule extra games, the Chemainus matchup was the last game the boys would play.

The team persevered with practice and it became evident just how far the players had come throughout the season. The coaches could not have asked for more from the players, and we were fortunate to have an awards/pizza night to finish off the season. We wish them all the best for their upcoming third term sport and hope to see many of them return to senior basketball next year.
