DELF exams

Testing French language proficiency

It's a big week for French students at Shawnigan, as 110 language learners complete their DELF exams.

Short for Diplome d'etudes en langue francais, the DELF program is overseen by the International Centre for French Studies and certifies linguists for their French proficiency.  Ranging from A1 to B2 levels, the gruelling exams include writing, speaking, listening and reading portions over the span of a week.

While Shawnigan's French exchange group was in France over Spring Break, Mr. Jean-Jacques Receveaux had the opportunity to meet with two of his former students.  Sitting in a café in Angers, M. Receveaux, who oversees Shawnigan's DELF exams and French Exchange, heard from these students just how crucial the programs have been for them.  The young women sent these endorsements – one in English and one in French!

Megan Wong:

The DELF was an integral part of my French learning experience at Shawnigan. It assisted me in focusing on particular areas or skills that I was less comfortable with, such as speaking and listening. Moreover, obtaining the B2 diploma of the DELF has also allowed me to waive foreign language credits in university. Additionally, the essential skills and knowledge I acquired through the DELF programme have furthered my interest and proficiency in the language, so much so that I have decided to pursue a dual degree in Communication and French at university.  Currently, I attend the University of Southern California, where a lot of emphasis is placed on French and foreign language studies. Dual degrees, with one degree being the study of a foreign language, are also highly encouraged.

Estefania Suarez:
