Environmental Club cleans up

Caring for the shoreline around Shawnigan Lake
For over 15 years, the E-Club has participated annually at this time of year in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup event. Our focus has always been on the outflow portion of Shawnigan Creek, including Masons Beach and William Rivers Park. This year was another productive one with over 750 different pieces of garbage collected and sorted!  The usual suspects tended to dominate this stretch of shoreline, including 195 cigarette butts, 100 food wrappers, 55 pieces of tobacco packaging and 45 beverage containers, which the team were able to recycle.

The most disappointing items retrieved were two full bags of garbage (that we chose not to open and sort) that were tossed onto the bank of the creek. In all, though, it was a rewarding hour and a half of work by the crew, and I am certainly thankful for their efforts.
