On Sunday, Dec. 3, the Shawnigan Lake School Midget Varsity hockey team travelled to Victoria to lend a hand at the annual Mustard Seed Street Church Christmas dinner. The Mustard Seed Street Church is a multi-purpose agency that helps to meet the needs of people living in poverty in Victoria. The event was held at the Bay Street Armoury, and over the course of the evening over 700 people from the Victoria community were served a full Christmas dinner. Moreover, there was live holiday-themed music from a variety of performers to make the night even more festive and enjoyable.
The boys from the hockey team took on a variety of roles during the dinner, helping to serve the food, clear tables, and whatever else was asked of them. Being so fortunate as to attend and play hockey for a school like Shawnigan, the boys were happy to have this opportunity to show their gratitude and to help others in a meaningful way. While there, the team also donated twenty winter coats to go to those in need in Victoria this winter.
Riley B. said that the event “really opened his eyes to how fortunate we are and that helping out feels good.” The team’s head coach, Jame Pollock, was very impressed by how well the boys engaged with those at the dinner and their enthusiasm for the occasion. “It was heart-warming to see all of the boys not hanging back and really getting involved with what the evening was all about,” said Mr. Pollock.
