Local community support

The annual South Cowichan Rotary Golf Classic
On Aug. 24, four staff ably represented Shawnigan at the annual South Cowichan Rotary “Clyde Ogilvie Golf Classic.” Perhaps a little bit of an understatement as the Shawnigan team achieved the lowest team score from amongst 140 players. I would like to extend our congratulations to Shawnigan staff members Corey Sykes, Justin Theriau, Derek Reid and Dave Grisdale for their superb sportsmanship demonstrated on the links at the Cowichan Golf and Country Club.

On behalf of the South Cowichan Rotary Club (Mill Bay), of which I have been a member for 26 years, I wish to acknowledge the School and the Headmaster for generously and continuously supporting the annual golf tournament and many other aspects of the Club’s ongoing fundraising initiatives. A first for Shawnigan this year was our sponsorship of the BBQ lunch at the start of this year’s golf tournament. This event was well received by all involved and, with the help of Shawnigan Admissions Associate Sarah Natrass, we were able to justly promote the School to attendees who share the Shawnigan’s community-minded spirit.

Through such community support, our Rotary Club is able to support numerous crucial community and global initiatives. Local initiatives include the CMS Food Bank, Cowichan Valley Hospice Society, scholarship and bursary presentations to all South Cowichan and Duncan high schools, local highway clean-up days, and local trail and bridge building, to name a few. On the wider stage, the Rotary Club supports important global causes such as international polio eradication and eye care missions.

I am proud to be a member of my local Rotary Club, knowing that I can count upon the willing support from colleagues at Shawnigan Lake School.
