I came to Shawnigan because I wanted something different from California, and Canada seemed very different, so I decided to give it a shot. My previous schooling was very intense and stressful, and I wanted a change and a more positive place that could support me better.
When I toured at Shawnigan, one of the first things I found was the Learning Center, and I instantly knew that this was the right place for me. Throughout my Shawnigan career it has been key in helping me be successful, not to mention all the Shawnigan teachers who have supported me through my journey at the School.
I did a lot of art before coming to Shawnigan and I definitely wanted a school that had a good theatre program and other performing opportunities, but I also wanted a school that would make me a well-rounded student. Shawnigan just seemed like the perfect choice as it offered me the opportunity to participate in sports, fine arts and academics.
I didn’t think that I was going to become so passionate about theatre, it just came naturally over time. Theatre has taught me that it’s okay to be who I am. People don’t think that someone who’s Asian-American would seriously choose theatre over sciences, and I wanted to challenge that. Theatre has taught me to be myself, and to be vulnerable. It has allowed me to explore different emotions, and helped me in my day-to-day life.
I didn’t think I was going to get the role of Elle in this year’s musical production of “Legally Blonde.” When I did get it, it just showed to me that yet again the McLeods have all this belief in me by thinking I can do it. It’s not an easy role, and it is definitely going to be the hardest role I will have ever done. It’s already teaching me so much about myself, including how to be a leader. Comparing myself to Elle, I see a lot of similarities between the two of us and I am excited to see myself evolve in the role.
Don’t be afraid to take every opportunity that is given to you at Shawnigan. Yes, your life might be very busy, and maybe you might not feel like you have enough time for everything, but when you focus on the things that make you happy and that you love you never know what opportunities might come your way.
