Shawnigan’s Model United Nations students recently spent three days participating in one of Canada’s premier educational simulations. Vancouver Model United Nations (VMUN) is the largest high school student-organized Model UN conference in North America, simulating world diplomacy and inspiring delegates to become more aware, more educated, and more thoughtful global citizens.
Students are assigned a nation to represent in an engaging debate on pressing issues, including global health, environment, security, finance, economies, human rights, and development. This year’s conference was held solely online in keeping with provincial health protocols.
Shawnigan’s Head Delegate Fido F. shares, “Students showed amazing endurance in this virtual marathon, which lasted almost 30 hours over the weekend. Research showed that it was challenging for most people to sit in front of the screen for the entire weekend. However, Shawnigan’s delegates engaged in the conversation, enjoyed the time socializing virtually with MUN students from all around the world, and genuinely appreciated the opportunity to debate and open their minds.”
As this year’s conference was completely virtual, organizers suggested that students wear the typical business attire on top but casual clothing on the bottom. “This created a relaxing yet hilarious atmosphere in our delegation group,” says Fido.
“The team had a celebration dinner on Saturday night, enjoyed pizza and sushi, and received some fun internal ‘awards!’ Best dressed went to Gordon K. and Linda L!”
