The Stag Café
The Stag Café opened its doors Friday night, sending enticing scents wafting down the hallways of the Main Building and introducing a whole new group of students to the challenges and delights of running a business.
The Stag Café is a learning lab for students enrolled in Shawnigan’s Entrepreneurship 12 classes, with students in Entrepreneurship and Marketing 10 joining the team in a job-shadowing capacity in the spring term. From the very start of the year, students run all facets of the business – from taking inventory to ordering supplies, from managing finances to cooking food. The program’s mandate is to provide experience, not gain profit; any profit they do make goes into the expansion of the program.
With a mouth-watering menu that includes a variety of burgers, Paninis, chicken tenders, milkshakes, and much more, this Shawnigan fixture is immensely popular with the student body. The student workers are constantly coming up with fresh ideas, such as naming food items after staff members and creating a milkshake of the month (this month’s very popular flavor is pumpkin spice). The Café is open to the School community on Tuesday and Friday nights and also often operates at special events such as student socials or when the School hosts large sporting events.
Last academic year, students were faced with the real-life challenge of adapting their business model and health and safety protocols for the pandemic. Under the guidance of teacher Mariel Solsberg, these creative thinkers were able to design a safe way to continue running their beloved business. This year’s modified COVID-19 guidelines have required the students to adapt their strategies once again, combing some of last year’s adaptations – such as online ordering and COVID-specific health and safety protocols – with some pre-pandemic approaches. Like other businesses worldwide, they will continue to monitor the shifting pandemic landscape and are prepared to make yet more adjustments as necessary.
As we enter a new year of the Stag Café, we all look forward to seeing how the team learns to problem-solve – and how to make a great burger in the process.
