Vancouver Model UN

Shawnigan's largest delegation!
The weekend before Ski Week, Shawnigan's Model UN team participated at the Vancouver Model United Nations conference.  With over 29 delegates, it was our largest delegation ever!  Each enjoyed their roles as representatives of various countries, constituencies and NGOs.  Highlights included an inspirational opening ceremony speech from Amanda Lindout who shared her story about being held for ransom for over 400 days in Somalia, the debates in respective committees and the opportunity to socialize with over one thousand students from across North America.

Although somewhat intense, it was an exciting week of debating and consensus building with other delegates.  A "big thank-you" to Kristina L. (Head Delegate), Henry L. and the faculty advisors (Lupton, Carballo, Klassen).  Although winning is not central to a positive Model UN experience, our delegation was recognized with some worthy conference mentions. In particular:

Zain K.  - Best Delegate - UNEP

Gabriela M. & Mary N. - Honourable Mentions - SPECPOL

Cecil A. - Most Outstanding Delegate (mace award) - House of Commons

Max B. - Best Researched - Historical Crisis Committee

Julianne G.  Most Outstanding Delegate - Joint Crisis Committee

Cassia N. - Honourable Mention in the United Nations Human Rights Council

– Paul Klassen
