Squash medals

Shawnigan's best at Canada Games

Shawnigan squash players are bringing two medals home from the Canada Winter Games.

A contingent of three athletes joined team BC for the 2015 event in Prince George. Playing on temporary glass courts at UNBC's Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre, Squash players found themselves playing in front of big crowds in one of the biggest attractions of the games.

Matthew T. initiated Shawnigan's medal grab when he scored a bronze in the Men's individual event. Having played through a string of tight matches before a semi-final defeat, Matt squeaked out a marathon victory over fellow British Columbian Gavin Maxwell in the bronze medal match (14-12, 8-11, 11-5, 10-12, 11-4).

Matt's bronze, along with a golden performance from Surrey's Michelle Garceau, marked the first time BC athletes had ever won medals in individual competition at the Canada Winter Games.

Matt then joined Ryan P. in forging a path to the semi-finals in the Squash Team Competition, eventually finishing fourth.

British Columbia's women, meanwhile, advanced undefeated throughout the Team Competition until a loss to Ontario in the gold medal match, resulting in a Silver medal for Shawnigan's Zoe C.
