The organizer of this year's Classical Concert spoke in Chapel on Thursday. She told us about her first experiences with classical music and encouraged us to give this kind of music a listen. The concert is June 13, from 7 - 8pm in the Shawnigan Chapel. The general public is welcome and admission is by donation. Proceeds will go to the Ministry of Mercy Orphanage.
I remember being introduced to my first voice teacher, who was a tenor. I didn’t like him very much at first because, unlike me, he didn’t like Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, or Rihanna. Rock music was totally out of the equation for him. Instead, he introduced me to names such as Mozart, Shubert and Bach. In our sessions, he taught me to make monstrous faces and to imagine I had continuous doors to open at the back to my head. Sometimes he would burst out in laughter when my Italian and mispronunciations got a little too funky. He had a rich tone when he spoke that made me perk up to listen to whatever he had to say. I remember the first time he sang, I was this close to being blown out the window and, to be frank, I’d never expected this definition of music.
Now, as a teenager, I can't believe how “uncool” I’ve become. I find myself sitting beside that old lady in a fur coat at an opera arena. I have become the girl that goes to book stores to pick up a “Handel” instead of a romance novel about vampires. Classical music has had a huge impact on me -- it didn’t just open my vocal range, but it opened my mind. Learning to appreciate something non-main stream was hard, but I will never regret that experience, because now it has become part of me.
Because I am such a classical music fan, I would like to draw your attention to a special concert this Saturday evening from 7-8pm in the chapel. There will be classical music showcasing our own, Shawnigan students such as Yuji on piano, Isabelle on piano, Tai Williams (voice) and the list goes on…. Come and discover something new.
We are supporting the Ministry of Mercy Orphanage through the Classical Concert. Admission is by donation. It is the largest orphanage in Nigeria, with over three hundred children, many of whom are the victims of mental and physical disabilities. The young women on their staff act as mothers to ten children each, caring for them daily as if they were their own. Our donations will help give these children a chance at living a lifestyle of resiliency, as well as determination and hope for the future. (Sounds a lot like Shawnigan!) If you are not able to attend, and would still like to donate, you may do so.
It is my personal belief that Shawnigan is a special place, and though it is over 12,000 km away, we can make a significant difference for an orphanage in Nigeria, helping children that may never understand what it means to have a father or a mother. Please join us in celebration and the sharing of music that’s more than 400 years old.
We acknowledge with respect the Coast Salish Peoples on whose traditional lands and waterways we live, learn and play. We are grateful for the opportunity to share in this beautiful region, and we aspire to healthy and respectful relationships with those who have lived on and cared for these lands for millennia.
