Bridgman Cup

Victoria's historic field hockey tourney

The Senior Girls Field Hockey Team laid another set of building blocks over the Thanksgiving Weekend.

Rather than enjoying a long weekend of turkey and TV, the group stayed together to compete at the Bridgman Cup. The oldest field hockey tournament in North America, the Bridgman Cup began in 1937 and is a perennial stepping-stone to the BC 'AA' and 'AAA' championships in November.

The Shawnigan squad opened this year's tournament with a 5-0 victory over GNS, followed by a 1-0 loss to Argyle Secondary. A scoreless draw against Gleneagle Secondary meant the team wouldn't qualify for the championship draw of the event, yet the girls showed great character by beating West Vancouver 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The final game of the tournament may well have been the team's best, with Annalena R. providing the game-winner inside the final minute of play as Shawnigan beat rival Frances Kelsey 2-1.
