Japan Super Science Fair

Shawnigan's team arrives in Kyoto

After a tiring 12-hour journey to Osaka we settled into on one of the Ritsumeikan University campuses (Biwako-Kusatu Campus) and from the handbook given to us found out that our Science Project Presentation was one of the first things awaiting us in the morning.

Our morning started with an authentic Japanese breakfast featuring miso soup and some other dishes that we couldn’t even imagine being served for breakfast. At the Science Fair venue, which is the newest one of all Ritsumeikan campuses (Osaka - Ibaraki), we were kindly greeted by our host student. We needed her help almost instantly when, being so awesomely organised, we found out that the scripts for our presentation weren’t actually printed out. The Japan Super Science Fair 2015 started up with a grand opening ceremony and introduction of all participating schools. After the opening ceremony it was time for us to move to our presentation venue. Our presentation was a part of biology section and it was a great pleasure to hear about some very high-quality scientific works in the same field. We were presenting third, and despite few technical difficulties that occurred in the beginning we managed to explain our project and its implications, and we received some feedback from commentating teachers.

The science project presentation session was followed by lectures from internationally renowned scientists. The lecture I attended on was about neuroscience in particular, vision and formation of visual impressions. The first day of JSSF was concluded by a series of cultural performances by the schools representing their countries. Unfortunately, this year we did not get to participate in the cultural presentation, but nevertheless we enthusiastically supported other Canadian students from Manitoba.

The first day of JSSF was incredibly exciting, busy and extremely tiring to the point that we spent a full minute trying to wake Zain up when he fell asleep on the bus on our way back to the residence.

I am impressed by kindness and hospitality of our hosts and all participants and I am really looking forward to the rest of our trip.
