Shawnigan's Varsity II hockey team is showing just how far the School's hockey program has come.
At this weekend's Ross Cup tournament, the squad earned a 2-2 record in a round robin vs. the top teams from some of Shawnigan's rival schools.
On Friday, Shawnigan opened play with a 3-2 win over St. George's, followed by a loss to an impressive Secondary team.
Tournament play was paused on Friday afternoon, when the most deserving players from each of the five teams took part in a skills competition, featuring fastest skater, hardest shot, rapid-fire, and breakaway competitions. Shawnigan's Jax E. won the breakaway event, while Daniel E. earned the top goaltender award.
Later on Friday, Shawnigan earned a 5-2 win over nearby Frances Kelsey Secondary, before dropping a terrific 2-1 game against Brentwood on Saturday morning.
Finishing fourth in the round robin, Shawnigan faced Kitsilano in an afternoon semifinal, as the tournament and the season came to an end.
"I'm really proud of how far this team has come" says Coach Ralph Fraser. "Our team demonstrated it could be competitive in a league boasting many players with abilities matching those from our varsity and prep teams."
