Senior boys wrap up season

4th on Vancouver Island

The senior boys are the final team to wrap up the basketball season, after a commendable run at the Vancouver Island 'AA' Championship.

After a second-place finish at the North Island Championship, Shawnigan earned a strong win over Parkland in the opening game of the Island tournament, coming back from a third-quarter deficit to win by 10.

A loss to Lambrick Park in the second round of the double knockout put pressure on Shawnigan in the Saturday morning matchup against Kwalicum. "We knew they hustle," says Coach Vito Pasquale, whose squad had faced the Kondors several times over the season. A 4th quarter push was enough to propel Shawnigan past Kwalicum 55-45 and into the 3rd-4th game versus St. Michaels University School.

With the final berth at the Provincial Championship on the line, Shawnigan produced a strong effort in the final game, executing offensive tactics and playing SMUS tough. Ultimately, the favoured Blue Jags earned the win, leaving Shawnigan in 4th place overall in the perennially-strong Island zone.

"For this crew to do what they did was outstanding," said Coach Pasquale of his team's performance.

Grade 12 standout Tristan M. was named a 2nd team all-star for his play in the tournament. Tristan will also join Shawnigan's Alexie P. at the Island Seniors Classic All-stars game in early April at UVic.
