On Tuesday, April 11, Buddy Wakefield returned to Shawnigan for a show in front of about 300 students in the Hugh Wilkinson Theatre. A three-time World Poetry Slam champion, Wakefield performed a range of work, from favorites like "Guitar Repair Woman" to more recent work, including "The Gift of My Hate" and a powerful new poem about the complications of family. He was accompanied, for a couple of poems, by Jackson G., on piano. Katherine Penhale '14 (Groves'), a former student in the Writing 12 class who is now studying embryology at the university of Calgary, opened the show with two recent poems. Buddy Wakefield has visited Shawnigan on two previous occasions, and we are always grateful for his ability to remind students of the power of the written--and spoken--word.
We acknowledge with respect the Coast Salish Peoples on whose traditional lands and waterways we live, learn and play. We are grateful for the opportunity to share in this beautiful region, and we aspire to healthy and respectful relationships with those who have lived on and cared for these lands for millennia.
