Shawnigan excels at Nationals

Athletes earn hardware at Canadian Squash Championship

Shawnigan's squash program has reached new heights.

Two School athletes landed on the top of the podium this weekend at the 2017 Canadian Junior Championships.

Placed on opposite sides of the draw, Michael M. and Ryan P. both advanced to Sunday's final, each without losing a single game.

The two rivals have faced each other a handful of times over the years, with Michael winning each time.  Notably, they produced an epic five-game showdown in the final of the 2016 Shawnigan Open.

On Sunday, Michael once again prevailed, winning the championship game in four games (11-2, 11-4, 11-13, 11-4).

The victory marks the third consecutive national under-19 title for Michael, a Grade 11 standout who joined the Shawnigan team this year.

While he is currently in Grade 12, Ryan will still be eligible to compete in the U-19 event next year as a university freshman.  At the conclusion of the tournament, Ryan was honoured with the Alexander Doucas Memorial Award, given to the junior player best exemplifying the spirit of fair play, sportsmanship and commitment to excellence.  The award is voted on by the players, coaches, organizers and referees from the championship.
