Colts win Provincials

BC Junior Champs

Shawnigan’s junior boys earned a second consecutive Provincial rugby title, with a 36-13 victory over Robert Bateman Secondary School on Friday.

After a narrow win over Carson Graham in Wednesday’s semifinal, the Colts seemed to improve in almost all areas of their game.  With support in the Rotary Stadium grandstand from the 1st XV, the Colts steadily pulled away from their opponents to defend last year’s championship.

We got off to an excellent start, both with impenetrable defence and quick ball recycling in attack,” says Shawnigan Coach Ander Monro.  “We scored early with a well-worked try from Moamen E., and William M. and Jamin H. added to that before halftime.”

The Colts had earned a silver medal in this year’s Provincial sevens championship, after beginning the season with a Spring Break tour to California.

Coach Monro says highlights of the week included “The way this group maximized their potential and fulfilled their goals, truly honouring the School motto [Palmam Qui Meruit Ferat].”

Monro also singled out captain Nathan G., saying "His honesty and leadership-by-example characterized the performances in the tournament.”
