Guidance Office invites Alumni back to speak about their university experience
Nicole Fredrickson ’15 (Strathcona), Megan Cholack-Briand ’16 (Kaye's), Koltin King ’16 (Ripley's), George Barton ’15 (Ripley's), Simon Gray ’15 (Duxbury), Mitch Oswald ’15 (Copeman's), and Josh Charlton-Kral ’16 (Copeman's).
Taking advantage of some local alumni coming home from university, the Guidance Office invited seven recent graduates from 2015 and 2016 to come and share their experiences with our current students. The graduates represented a wide spectrum of interests as they were representing schools from across Canada, including one from Ireland. They offered advice about transitioning from their life at Shawnigan to post-secondary. A common theme of the evening was putting yourself out there and getting involved in your new community. The graduates also shared some frank experiences about their own lessons learned, especially concerning the pace of academic life at university. Along with sharing their experiences about university life, one of our alumni, who is taking a gap year to pursue an athletic career, offered some sage advice to our students about what to expect when you leave the predictable academic confines. Thanks to our grads for taking the time to return to Shawnigan to share their experiences and to Alison Dewis for her organization of this important event.
We acknowledge with respect the Coast Salish Peoples on whose traditional lands and waterways we live, learn and play. We are grateful for the opportunity to share in this beautiful region, and we aspire to healthy and respectful relationships with those who have lived on and cared for these lands for millennia.
