Opening Day

A warm welcome to new and returning students

Hot on the heels of the sunny Labour Day long weekend, Shawnigan welcomed new and returning students to campus on Tuesday for the start of the upcoming academic year.

Mitchell Hall was abuzz with Prefects, Admissions staff, faculty members and other support staff all poised to greet the 180 new arrivals and help launch them on their Shawnigan journey.

After spending the morning settling into their new boarding houses, meeting housemates, and starting the process of acclimatization, the new students were joined by returning students in the afternoon.

Amid a flurry of unpacking and happy commotion, old friendships were cemented and new friendships quickly formed as new and returning students shared stories about summertime fun and the excitement and events of the year to come.

"Don't be afraid to get yourself out there," said 2017-18 Head of School Dean M. as he spoke to new students in the Chapel.  Introducing himself and his Prefect group to the newcomers, he advised them; "Don't be afraid to fail, and be yourself."

The whole School, represented by 515 students from more than 30 countries, gathered for a BBQ in the Quad in the late afternoon. This shared event was followed by a chapel service for new students and house meetings in the dorms.

Classes, sports and fine arts all begin on Wednesday.
