While many Shawnigan programs took a well-earned break over the Thanksgiving weekend, two ice hockey teams continued their development at tournaments in Greater Vancouver.
The School's Girls Prep team faced off against some of the top teams in the country at the West Coast Invitational.
After a competitive weekend, the girls faced Northern Alberta Xtreme in a 3rd/4th matchup, falling 4-2.
Coach Carly Haggard says the team had many positives to build on and worked very hard. The girls face rival Delta in their home opener, Oct. 14.
Meanwhile, the Bantam Prep squad tested its mettle against the top academies from around the region at the 32nd annual International Challenge Cup in Chilliwack. This heavily-scouted AAA event features 24 teams from Western Canada and the Northwestern United States.
Despite being short-benched, Coach David Hyde-Lay says the Shawnigan squad played well and showed tremendous improvement throughout the weekend. Coach Hyde-Lay points to the superlative bench management of Bob Beatty as well as the leadership of Seiya T. as key components in the team's success.
In addition to representing the School on the ice, the Bantams participated in a noteworthy Thanksgiving initiative.
Following the lead of parents Renae Wheatley and Pam Ratzlaff, the players donated their pocket money from the week and then distributed care packages to the less fortunate in the area.
Meanwhile, off the ice the Senior Girls Field Hockey team placed 11th at the 25th annual Bridgman Cup in Victoria.
“The girls have improved each week and our performance on the field is indication of this improvement,” says Head Coach Shiaz Virjee. “Last week the girls won against Francis Kelsey going into the top provincial tournament Bridgman Cup at UVic. We played well in all our games and our stand-in goalie Abigail K. from Grade 9 was tremendous. The senior girls rallied around her and we scored goals against top teams such as Handsworth, who was the eventual winner over Cowichan.”
This week is a big week for the girls as they prepare to play one of the top teams in the province, Cowichan Secondary, on Thursday at the Cowichan Sportsplex and then Brentwood College on Friday at home.
