Support came dressed in denim, as Shawnigan rallied to raise funds for the BC Children's Hospital.
An annual tradition at Shawnigan and across the province, Jeans Day 2018 was preceded by another touching message in the School's chapel.
On May 1, Grade 11 student Mishayla C. shared the story of the treatment her sister received as a youngster. "BC Children's has done so much for my sister and my family, and I'm extremely grateful for that," she told her peers. "They give that same support and hope to every child that walks through their doors."
On May 3, students and staff raised more than $6,000 for the cause, with the majority of that money contributed by the students themselves.
As part of the initiative, Carl S., Grace L., and Alexis W., were named the best dressed students for their commitment to the Canadian tuxedo. Duxbury was named the top house in terms of participation, with 100 per cent of Duxburians contributing to the cause. Overall, 94 per cent of Shawnigan students donated at least a toonie to support the BCCH.
Shawnigan's strong support over the years even earned some recognition from the BC Children's Hospital Foundation. Co-ordinated by Mr. Jason Lam, the efforts have raised nearly $30,000 over the past six years, leading to Shawnigan being named a "Jeanspiration."
