First term sports conclude

Swim and V-ball teams reach new heights

Bare trees and blue skies are ushering in a second term of sport at Shawnigan.

A week after a third-place finish for the senior field hockey squad, Shawnigan's swim team became the second group to compete at the Provincial Championships this year.

Fifteen Shawnigan athletes qualified for provincials this year, with 13 of them making the journey to Richmond last weekend.

Shawnigan's top showing came from the Girls 4x50m freestyle relay team (Nicole S., Georgia H., Kate S., Jamie B.) which claimed a seventh-place finish in the A final – earning the best result in Shawnigan history.  Michael R.'s personal best in the 50m freestyle also impressed, earning ice cream for the entire group and honours as Shawnigan Athlete of the Week.

"The swimmers had a fantastic week," reports Coach Carmen Boudreau.  "This year marks a record for the number of swimmers qualifying for Provincials, and they really did swim well."

Also wrapping up the fall season, Shawnigan's senior girls represented the school at the Vancouver Island AA Volleyball Championship.

Ranked 7th heading into the tournament, the girls finished third in their pool to earn a promising quarter-final berth. After a shock loss by Brentwood in the other pool, Shawnigan faced their local rivals, dropping the quarter-final by a narrow 25-20, 25-22 margin to finish 5th overall.

"This was the best season we've had since I've been around," said Coach Eric Venables of his team's efforts.  "Their talent, attitude, and camaraderie made them a lot of fun to work with."  Coach Venables also singled out captain Sarah C. for her outstanding leadership all season long.

Shawnigan hockey teams also continued to compete in mid-season CSSHL play.

The Midget Prep squad continued an outstanding start to the season, scoring road wins over West Vancouver (Saturday) and Yale (Sunday).

Playing on home ice, the undefeated Midget Varsity team hosted Pursuit of Excellence for a trio of games, winning 4-2 on Friday, 3-1 on Sunday, and 11-2 on Sunday.

In other action, the Girls' Prep team ventured to Winnipeg, earning one victory and three losses over the span of three busy days.  Meanwhile, the Bantam Prep team travelled to Greater Vancouver, dropping matchups against Burnaby and Yale.

Tuesday brings sport changeover day to Shawnigan, with athletes heading to fresh athletic options for the new term.  Ice hockey teams continue CSSHL play until Spring Break.

The School will gather on Thursday morning to recognize those who have earned first-term Athletic Colours.
