Law trip

An excursion to a prison and courthouse

Students took a journey through the legal system on Tuesday, with a visit to a courthouse and a prison.

Members of Mr. Galen Loiselle's Law 12 classes began the excursion with a visit to the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre, also known as the Wilkinson Road Jail.

Guided by Warden Pat Doherty (a past Shawnigan parent), the group got an inside look at the maximum-security facility as well as the programs offered by corrections staff.

"It was cool to see the structure of it, and also the way they classified the prisoners according to their crimes," Zimmi N. said after the visit, adding "I liked the facilities they had too, like the bike repair workshop and the kitchens."

After agreeing not to leave anyone behind, the group continued to the BC Law Court building in downtown Victoria.

Students were fortunate to sit in on a high profile criminal trial, observing 'Voir Dire' proceedings of a case currently before the BC Supreme Court.

They then got further insights into the legal profession in a question-and-answer session with Supreme Court Master Carolyn Bouck, and then toured the Justice Access Centre, which helps give legal information to those representing themselves.

"It's a very, very long process," Afton E. laughed on her way out of the court building. "But the lawyers are all so nice to each other," Ashley M. added.
