Shawnigan's dream of defending the girls 'AAA' field hockey championship has been extinguished, after a pair of unfortunate losses in the group phase.
After opening with an overpowering 6-0 victory over Sullivan, the girls lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to West Vancouver on Thursday afternoon. Shawnigan had dominated the second half of the affair, but couldn't convert on a slew of scoring chances. West Van found the back of the net on a short corner against the flow of play, and Shawnigan proved unable to find the equalizer.
Needing a win against Kelowna on Friday morning, Shawnigan came out strong, with Noa W. blasting home an early goal to give the hosts a promising lead. However, the Owls struck back with a short corner, setting up a 1-1 deadlock at halftime. Another successful short corner gave Kelowna a 2-1 lead midway through the second half, and despite extended pressure for the rest of the match, Shawnigan couldn't penetrate the Kelowna defence.
With a 1-2 record in round-robin play, Shawnigan will now look to rebound in the consolation side of the tournament, starting with a matchup against Sir Winston Churchill Secondary on Friday afternoon.
***Update - Shawnigan defeated Winston Churchill 3-1 on Friday afternoon, to advance to a consolation semi-final on Saturday morning.
